Levonorgestrel is a nortestosterone derivative, an active isomer of norgestrel which is a potent inhibitor of ovulation with androgenic activity. It binds to progesterone and androgen receptors and slows the release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus, thereby resulting in the suppression of the normal physiological luteinizing hormone (LH) surge that precedes ovulation.
